The Required diagnosis of a mental illness...
Insurance companies only pay for things that are “medically necessary.” This means that someone has to actually diagnose you with a mental health disorder AND prove that it is impacting your health on a day-to-day basis. Many of life’s problems are not mental health disorders. Many folks seek treatment before their issue would meet criteria for diagnosis as a mental health disorder, which is such a good thing.
Your insurance company will tell you, “A quote for benefits does not guarantee payment…” This means that you can be told over the phone that something is covered. You can be given an authorization number. And you can still be denied once they review the diagnosis. So if you think you are using health insurance to cover counseling, and the therapist receives a denial of the claim, you are still responsible for that.
Clients can cancel or reschedule an appointment anytime, as long as they provide 24 hours notice. If you cancel an appointment with less than 24 hours notice, or fail to show up, you will be charged for the appointment. Some practices have a 48-hour policy. Some even have a 72-hour policy. Ours is 24 hours, and we are firm at 24 hours.
This cancellation policy is really important for our counseling practice because, we reserve for you, and all our clients, a full hour of our time for the session and clinical notes. If a client cancels with less than a full 24-hour notice, we won’t be able to fill that time slot, and we’ll lose an entire hour from our work schedule. We want you to know that our cancellation policy in not a penalty or a punishment. 99.9% of our clients understand this. Very rarely, will we have a client who will feel that he or she is being punished when we charge them a late cancellation fee. We want to make sure that you don’t feel this way, if someday you miss an appointment. Truth be told, if you are in counseling long enough, at some point you might forget about an appointment, or something will come up in your schedule that will result in you missing an appointment. Maybe you’ll need to work late. Maybe you’ll get a sudden onset of the flu. Maybe your kids will have doctor appointments, or your car will break down, or something unavoidable will come up.
We are never upset with clients when they miss an appointment. We know that’s life. In return, our clients understand that scheduling an appointment with us is like buying tickets to an event. If you miss the event, it doesn’t matter why you missed it, or even if it was your first time, you can’t turn in your tickets for a refund. Also, our late cancellation and no-show fee is $50. It’s important to remember that insurance will not pay for missed appointments, so you will be responsible for the full $50.
Phone and video conference appointments are available to Indiana residents only. Please request an appointment https://www.therapyportal.com/p/harmony47905/ and indicate in the “memo” field if you would like an in office or video conference appointment.
